The Ormond scandal happened just after I left uni, but I did recognise at least one of my law lecturers in the book, and I was at college myself only a few years before, so the world was very familiar to me. Helen Garner certainly finds Gregory an appealing and sympathetic character, which is perhaps why she finds herself so conflicted. Maybe if he'd been a Weinstein-type person she might not have felt so torn. I knew Alan Gregory, who was a teacher when I was at school. It was such a shock when he was accused of this. He ran the school choir and was very funny and well liked by all of us.
