Marjorie's redemption came so easily, and with very little influence from Jean, really; the Anthonys did all the hard work, and most of that was off-screen! Marjorie's about-face seemed a bit... unearned. But that's just my two cents.
This was my first Constance Savery, I had no idea she wrote so many books!A latte beckonshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12967372772145537800noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3773539610706998068.post-85499967936120175642012-07-18T05:38:39.408+10:002012-07-18T05:38:39.408+10:00We read the book from Jean's perspective, seei...We read the book from Jean's perspective, seeing how self-centered Marjorie is, and at every turn Marjorie spoils Jean's vacation. So, when Marjorie is finally revealed in her true colors, we want her to receive a little retribution. But Jean won't do that for us, because Savery believes in restoring people, not condemning them. The challenge for the reader is to feel the same way, to be pleased with Jean's decision.Eric Schonblomhttp://www.constancesavery.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3773539610706998068.post-81965086501860529162012-07-17T12:11:15.555+10:002012-07-17T12:11:15.555+10:00I'm intrigued, Eric, I'm not quite sure wh...I'm intrigued, Eric, I'm not quite sure what you mean!A latte beckonshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12967372772145537800noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3773539610706998068.post-71739867671586203372012-07-17T05:27:30.108+10:002012-07-17T05:27:30.108+10:00I note that you have "Breton Holiday" on...I note that you have "Breton Holiday" on your reading list. The author, Constance Savery, has prepared a trap for you. I think it takes two readings before you realize that there is a little more to it than "Jean is nice and Marjorie is awful." I think that the reader, like Jean, needs to make a decision at the end of the book: what do you want Jean to do, really?Eric Schonblomhttp://www.constancesavery.comnoreply@blogger.com
